Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure, the Ford family was looked after by her grandmother, mom and godparents. When she was a young girl she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teenage years and she joined National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually joining with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy that became part of her resume in 1996.
